About & Methodology
How It Works
NetSalary is a free calculator that estimates your take-home pay after all major payroll taxes. Enter your gross annual salary, select your state and filing status, and instantly see your net pay broken down by federal income tax, state income tax, Social Security, and Medicare contributions.
Tax Calculations
- Federal Income Tax: Calculated using 2026 IRS tax brackets with the standard deduction applied based on your filing status.
- State Income Tax: Calculated using 2026 state tax rates. Supports all 50 states plus DC, including progressive bracket systems, flat rates, and no-income-tax states.
- Social Security: 6.2% on earnings up to the $184,500 wage base limit for 2026.
- Medicare: 1.45% on all earnings, plus an additional 0.9% on earnings above the threshold for your filing status.
Data Sources
Tax bracket data is sourced from the IRS (Revenue Procedure 2024-40), the Tax Foundation, and individual state revenue department publications. We update this data annually when new rates are published.
